Insomniac Games are hard at work on Marvel’s Spider-Man 2, the follow-up to one of the most critically acclaimed superhero games of all time.

 

Insomniac wanted to tell an original story that was not linked to an existing property, creating a unique universe (known as Earth-1048) that has since appeared in novels, merchandise, and comics. As with its thoughtful missions and characters, the game’s traversal system takes the best of the previous two Spider-Man games and expands them tenfold. Both Peter and Miles retain their own unique way of swinging and flipping through the city, replete with a collectible wardrobe of suits that sent this reviewer to the game’s photo mode for hours. The second installment in a bestselling Spider-Man series by Insomniac Games. The sequel features two main playable characters – Peter Parker and Miles Morales.

 

If you still need any combat-related trophies try to pair them up with Collectibles, many of them feature enemies. Getting bronze medals in the Mysterium Challenges is enough for trophy purposes, no need to get silver or gold. All Collectibles get marked when unfogging the map, except Spider-Bots which are unmarked. Bestowed by the same force that created Venom, the Black Suit is a Spider-Fan’s dream come true — the strength and ferocity of an alien powerhouse are packed into Peter’s new suit after the lifeform latches onto him. Phin attempts to go through with her plan but this fails as the overloaded reactor almost destroys all of Harlem, and Miles’s mother and his uncle work together to evacuate Harlem. Miles uses that as his chance to talk to Phin, and he convinces her not to go through with it. Ultimately, Phin sacrifices herself to help Miles save the city, by flying him high above the city, so he can release the energy where no one else will be harmed from the explosion besides herself.

 

These characters do add a bit more flavour to the world and its largely homogenous population of NPCs you’re clearly not intended to look at too closely. Speaking of boss battles, that’s one area that takes a noticeable step up from our initial tangos with Kingpin, Vulture, and the rest. One of my criticisms of the first in Insomniac’s series was how uninspired many of the showdowns felt, with their quicktime-heavy fights making a light impact. Improvements were made in Miles Morales, but here in the full-fledged sequel, boss battles really come to life. You’re made to wait a little too long for them sometimes, but when they do arrive they never fail to excite.

 

Peter also briefly appeared in Across the Spider-Verse in both versions of his Advanced Suit. Spider-Bots are the hardest Collectible to find in Spider-Man 2, because unlike the other Collectibles, they aren’t automatically marked on the map. You can also get the ‘All-Seeing’ perk within the Traversal tab to mark them on your in-game map – use this to farm tech parts, too.

 

After playing Marvel’s Spider-Man 2, fans began to worry about the future of Peter Parker, but the actor playing his role assures that the character will return in the next game. After watching the latest PlayStation Showcase conference, I have very mixed feelings. On the one hand, Sony showed some really exciting games; on the other, their release dates are either distant, or totally unspecified. This time the superheroes must face two primary villains – Kraven the Hunter and Venom. Of course, a hero is nothing without its villains, and Spider-Man’s rogues gallery is almost unparalleled. Outside of the likes of Venom, Kraven, and Lizard seen in the trailers, Insomniac has kept many more cards hidden up its sleeve.
